Dear families,

That is it, Term 3 is over... Term 4 is just around the corner with all the fun that comes with it!

Term 3 has flown by with plenty of excitement and achievements! Our Year 6 students worked hard preparing for their very first official French exam, the DELF Prim', while some of our high schoolers geared up for their DELF Junior exam in November. We proudly celebrated 25 years of our bilingual program, welcomed Taren Point students for a thrilling Olympiad event in honour of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, and saw our francophone students rise to the challenge of the Rallye Lecture. And to top it all off, we’re thrilled to announce the successful renewal of our prestigious Label FrancEducation!

While all this was happening, the team was already working on term 4 - and also 2025! The French Market (you won't be able to miss it!), the French spelling bee as a school project, the enrolments in the bilingual program at KHPS, the enrolments for the extra-curricular classes for Year 7 to 12...

Bring on term 4!

In the meantime, we wish you a restful and sunny school holiday,

The FANS Team

Label FrancEducation Renewal

For the 5th consecutive time, KHPS and FANS have renewed successfully the Label FrancEducation, which is a recognition of the excellence of our bilingual program.
Founded in 2012 by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Label FrancEducation quality seal is granted to foreign schools proposing French bilingual sections of extremely high quality as part of the school programs in their country.
Did you know that KHPS was the first school in Australia to receive this accreditation back in 2012?

Well done to our teachers who are working tirelessly to update content and resources, and ensure a program of quality is taught to our children.

Spreading joy one jar at a time

To celebrate the Paris Olympics 2024, our team distributed jars of Bonne Maman Chocolate-Hazelnut spread to KHPS families, thanks to our partner France at Home.

A simple gesture of handing a jar was lighting students' faces and we knew the first thing they would do after dropping their schoolbag at home would be opening the jar for a comforting afternoon treat!

As the weather was rather cold and windy during distribution, our treat ended up as spread on fresh bread with a glass of hot milk on the side to be dipped in!  so French! oops!

25 years anniversary celebrations

25 years of bilingual program - what a milestone! we couldn't let this go by without a fuss!

In the morning of the celebratory day (Saturday 7 September 2024), FANS was honoured to welcome some VIPs during a small gathering: representatives of the French community (Consul General, Conseillers consulaires, Alliance Française, Lycee Condorcet and Taren Point),  Northern Beaches Council Mayor and Member of Wakehurst at the NSW Assembly, our current FANS committee members and staff, including many teachers of French, former Presidents and teachers and the school executive team.

As Mrs Duprat, President of FANS, expressed: “It is an absolute pleasure to stand before you today as we celebrate the 25th anniversary of our French-English bilingual program. […] This program has not only grown but flourished. We are leading the way as professionals but also educating bilingual citizens able to navigate an ever-changing world with this experience of mixed community bilingual education. [...] We also owe a great deal of gratitude to the school itself. You have provided the environment and resources for our students to thrive, and for that, we are deeply thankful”

The excellence of the teaching and the positive impact that the association and the program have had over the years were acknowledged by all.

We are inspired to continue for at least another 25 years!

The celebrations continued with the “12 Travaux de Killarnix”, an afternoon of fun aimed at families of our school community, current and past.

300 children, full of magic potion, and their parents took part in 12 activities from puzzle making and solving enigmas to musical chairs, penalty shootout, tug of war and broom drop.

Smiles and laughter were all around the school oval.

The activities were followed by a barbecue and buffet, a karaoke, and the reveal of Killarnix!

We are so happy you enjoyed our anniversary party and trusted our team to deliver a great event!
This gives us energy to keep offering you the best: French teaching and community gatherings.

We thank all the volunteers who helped during the afternoon, especially to pack up! We cannot do it without you!

DELF Prim' exam preparations

Every year, students in Year 6 enrolled in the Bilingual Program are invited to sit the DELF Prim’ Exam at the start of term 4.

The DELF is an official diploma awarded by the French Ministry of Education in France to certify the competency of candidates outside of France in the French language. It is operated by the Alliance Française who will be spending the day at the school with officially accredited examinators to assess the students.

This year, the exam will be held on Tuesday 29th October (Week 3, Term 4).

Teachers of French have been coaching the students registered for the exam throughout the term with mock written and oral exams to ensure students know what to expect and help boost their confidence.

All students were offered feedback by their “examinator” following every practice sessions.

We wish them all good luck and we can't wait to hand them their first official French diploma!

Paris Olympics 2024 inspiration:

The "Olympiads" at KHPS
In the first half of the term, KHPS and Camberwell Primary School students participated in a friendly competition on the theme of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Students from each school had the same activities to complete following the same rules and with the same "passport" to complete to tally points. It was fantastic to see the students having so much fun!

On this day, some students from Taren Point Public School came to visit us following KHPS visit to TPS the previous term. It was fantastic to welcome TPS and for the students to join us in the activities.

KHPS received a total of 12 medals, including 4 Gold, 3 Silver and 5 Bronze and the winning teams received their ribbons with pride at the end of August.

We thank our wonderful teachers who spent countless hours organising these fun activities, for the sheer pleasure of our little ones!

Badminton Competition in Canberra
In Term 2, students in years 4 to 6 had the opportunity to trial for a badminton team.
With over 40 eager participants, 12 students were selected to represent KHPS and FANS in Canberra during Term 3.

In preparation for the competition, the selected students took part in weekly training sessions where they improved their skills.
In Week 7, they travelled to Telopea Park School alongside Lycée Condorcet for 2 nights.

At Cottermouth Camp, students enjoyed a bush walk, an orientation race and a full day of badminton matches.

Teams were a mix of students from all schools, offering a wonderful opportunity for students to meet and connect with other French speakers.

Rallye Lecture Challenge

1953 books read in the space of 6 weeks by our 240 Francophone students! What a tremendous success of this year's edition of the Rallye Lecture.

Draw your Teacher of French

As part of the festivities for the 25th Anniversary of the bilingual program, we asked students to draw their teacher of French.
Alongside their knowledge of French, we have great artists in our school.

Term 4 French Spelling Bee

All students at KHPS will be invited to take part in the French Spelling Bee selection.
Kindy to Year 2 will be competing against CPS students with the lists of words.

We are looking forward to an amazing demonstration of our students skills!

DELF B1 and B2 Junior Exams

Congratulations to the handful of students who sat successfully the DELF B1 and B2 Junior exams at the Alliance Française Sydney in May!

We hope to present even more students at the November session.

The DELF is an internationally-recognised diploma of French proficiency, providing a valuable certificate for those interested in living, studying or working in a Francophone country.

News & Current Affairs Workshop in 2025

FANS will be expanding its offer of classes for high school students, by offering a News and Current Affairs workshop from 2025.
This class will be open to students from Year 9 due to its sensitive content, although younger students are welcome to participate.

Enrolments for 2025 high school classes will open in term 4.

Why continuing French with DELF classes from Year 7?

KHPS students leave primary school with a much higher level of French than any other school in Sydney.
Whilst Killarney Heights  High School has an  adapted offer to adjust to their level, DELF classes give an extra focus on conversation and written expression. The benefit of DELF comes in the later years of studies: for the HSC French exam and the possibility to undertake university studies in Francophone countries.

Teachers' corner

Professional Learning with the Alliance Française
In Term 3, our full team of teachers had the opportunity to learn more about the A1 level of DELF with our partner Alliance Française de Sydney.

This gives our teachers tools and a better understanding of the teaching of French as a foreign language and allows our team to work on the continuity of learning from Kindy to Year 6.

This training will be extended in Term 4 for more on the A1 level. In 2025, 2 sessions on A2 level are already planned.

These trainings happen outside school hours, so children will be happy to know their teachers also have Intensive French Before School lessons!

The team will also have a full day of professional learning in Term 4 at the Alliance Française in the CBD to create even more practical tools to transfer to their lessons at school.

As a key player in bilingual education and as an employer, we believe in offering opportunities to improve our team practices and knowledge. This benefits our teachers and our students equally.

French Market 2024

Sunday 17 November, 9am to 4pm, KHPS

This is a not-to-be-missed event, the main fundraiser for our bilingual program, and we can even say our flagship event!

And it is happening in:

Known Sydney-wide and eagerly awaited for by our visitors, partners, families – and our very own students! – the French Market will unfold a fantastic day out for families, featuring rides, face painting, games, fairy floss, and delicious French treats like crepes and waffles. Visitors will also be able to enjoy a unique shopping experience with around 60 professional vendors and delightful French music performances.

With the team already hard at work, you will be hearing from us a lot in the coming weeks…

What started out as a humble school fete is now in its 18th edition and has become “a must-do” on the market scene in New South Wales. If you have never seen it, check this out.

This major fundraiser is vital for the sustainability of our bilingual program. While member fees cover staff salaries, this event funds essential operational costs, recruitment efforts, and new educational resources for our very own children!

We need your help too! Whether you can volunteer for a few hours at a stall on the day or assist with coordination efforts now, every bit of support makes a difference.

Reach out to frenchmarket@fanssydney.org if you’d like to get involved!

Join the buzz on our social media and help us spread the word: follow us on Facebook and/or Instagram and like, comment or share our posts so we can grow our base of followers, increase the number of visitors, and raise even more money for our bilingual program!
