Dear families,

Another term has now passed and we are already halfway through 2024!

Term 2 was a busy term - are there any quiet terms, anyway? - with an info night presenting options after Year 6 to continue French, the opening of 2025 enrolments, our famous raclette night and a handful of our high school students sitting the DELF Junior exam in May; an excursion for some Year 4 Francophone students at Taren Point on the theme of the Paris Olympic Games 2024, FANS Annual General Meeting, the poem recitation competition and World Music Day event in June...

We were not done with term 2 yet that we were already working on term 3: Rallye Lecture and DELF Prim' exam preparations in class, FANS 25th anniversary for our term's social event, badminton camp in Canberra, and of course, our delightful French Market, that, although in term 4, needs lots of preparation ahead!

The winter break is also synonymous with Bastille Day, for us Frenchies. We are lucky to live in a vibrant city organising many events around the Bastille Day celebrations. We hope to meet you at one of the events around Sydney!

Best wishes for a fun and restful school holiday,

FANS Annual General Meeting

On 6th June, FANS AGM was held at KHPS in the presence of Mrs Gillian Tegg, KHPS principal, and Mr Martin Juillard, the Consul General of France in Sydney.

The 2023 financial report, along with updates on past and current projects, as well as fees for the 2025 school year were shared with the audience.

Congratulations to the newly-elected FANS committee!

We thank all participants who braved the pouring rain to attend our AGM.

Thank you also to Janos Jersch and Terrence Moloney for the countless hours they devoted to our Association, and to the newly elected committee for the future time we know they will dedicate ensuring our Association continues thriving.

FANS & Alliance Française Partnership

After years of successful collaboration, FANS is happy to officially recognise our partnership with Alliance Française de Sydney, to mutually promote our cultural events and educational programs.

Alliance Française de Sydney President François Romanet and former FANS President Janos Jersch were both on hand to sign the agreement and celebrate our ongoing friendship.

Longue vie to the Alliance Française - FANS partnership!

World Music Day 2024

Rebranded "World Music Day in Killarney Heights" to match the spirit of the worldwide representation of this celebration, our event is still small, but with strong potential to grow!

Across two stages, many performers of all ages joined in to showcase their skills and talent for everyone's great pleasure.

Aside the music, visitors enjoyed yummy food - from hot soups to BBQ, via raclette, saucissons / brie / rillettes sandwiches and cakes.

The tombola was a success, as well as the fairy floss, as usual!

Thank you to all the conductors and performers for finding time in their busy schedule, thank you to the school for entrusting us with their space once again, thank you to the visitors for joining us on the day, and thank you to the many volunteers who donated items and/or their time to make this event a success.

We hope to see you next year for an even better event!

Paris Olympics 2024

The French community around Sydney is buzzing preparing events following the theme of the Paris Olympics 2024.

As a close partner of the Consulat Français a Sydney, FANS is inviting its members to participate in the Paris-Sydney 2024 Olympic Parade, on Saturday 13th July in Circular Quay!

Choose which flag you want to walk behind - being your home-country or your adopted country flag, and celebrate the Olympic Games with a mystery competition and a medal ceremony.

With the many nationalities represented among our members, our community can certainly grow the crowd of the parade, by waving at each other while walking behind our selected flag!

Raclette fever!

A great night was had by all at our raclette & dance party last May.

Thank you to all the volunteers who, among other things, spent their Saturday setting up the room, preparing the food and pulling the electricity from every corner of the hall to plug the many machines lent to us by our wonderful community.

The event was a great success with great food, good company, and lots of dancing after a delicious meal!

Excursion at Taren Point Public School

Earlier this term, a group of 17 Year 4 Francophone stream students and two house captains travelled to  Taren Point Public School (TPPS), south of Sydney. TPPS is also part of the AAFEBS network (The Australian Association of French-English Bilingual School), as is KHPS. Our two schools are the only public primary schools with a French program.

Students participated in a day of French immersion while playing outdoor games. With the Paris Olympic Games around the corner, this was an opportunity to celebrate the theme, make friends, and strengthen ties.

After the games, participants enjoyed a hot lunch and visited the Taren Point school grounds.

We are looking forward to hosting Taren Point students for a similar event in August.

It was an amazing opportunity. We met other people and made new friends. Everyone in the school was very nice and funny. This experience was wonderful. We are so grateful that we got invited to visit taren Point.

New French books at the library

So many new books have landed at the KHPS library - including a lot of new books in French!
Thank you to Ms Muddell for organising a wall of books in French to try and entice our students to read in French.
Feel free to remind your child that there are plenty of options for all levels in French language: from comic books to novels!

DELF Training
Early in term 2, some of our teachers participated to a training about the DELF Prim' A1 and A2 hosted by the Alliance Française de Sydney.

The DELF Prim' exam is offered as an option to Year 6 students who would like to receive a formal diploma to testify about their level of French.  Teachers will be able to apply the learnings from their training when preparing the students who will have elected to take the exam.

Families of year 6 students will receive communications about this exam and will be able to register their children in term 3.

Department of Education Training

The team of Teachers of French went to Parramatta on Friday 21st June, accompanied by Mrs Tegg, to attend another training, this time organised by the Department of Education (DoE).

They were presented a model of lesson in Greek that they then adapted to French. Following these intense few hours of work, they engaged in a highly competitive soccer game on the roof!

It is a great opportunity and a sign of trust that FANS teachers are invited to take part in a Department of Education network training.

End of Term Lunch

Last but not least, the teachers gathered for a quick but hopefully relaxing end of term lunch.

A little something to thank them for their dedication, efforts, and hard work during the term!

French Market 2024

Join us for a day of fun and support our bilingual program!

Mark your calendars for a special event that draws visitors from all over Sydney and beyond! On Sunday 17th November, on KHPS grounds, will unfold a fantastic day out for families, featuring rides, face painting, games, fairy floss, and delicious French treats like crepes and waffles. Visitors will also be able to enjoy a unique shopping experience with around 60 professional vendors and delightful French music performances.

What started out as a humble school fete is now in its 18th edition and has become “a must-do” on the market scene in New South Wales. If you have never seen it, check this out.

This major fundraiser is vital for the sustainability of our bilingual program. While member fees cover staff salaries, this event funds essential operational costs, recruitment efforts, and new educational resources for our very own children!

We currently have a dedicated team of volunteers, known as The French Market Committee, led by our wonderful new coordinator Noemie, who is assisted by FANS President, Clemence, during this handover. They have already begun planning to ensure this event is a success. Let's give Marie, Rowena, Maureen, Cressida, Geraldine, Pierre, Xavier & Sophie a big round of applause for their hard work and commitment!

We need your help too! Whether you can volunteer for a few hours at a stall on the day or assist with coordination efforts now, every bit of support makes a difference.

Reach out to frenchmarket@fanssydney.org if you’d like to get involved!

Happy holidays everyone!
Bonnes vacances à tous!
