FANS Admin Team

Dear members,

We hope you had a great first term back at school and are looking forward to a nice Easter break. Here is a snapshot of Term 1’s highlights, as well as key dates for the bilingual program and events in Term 2.

Learning with FANS in 2022

KHPS French Bilingual Program

FANS at KHPS started this year with a team of 14 Teachers of French and 560 students over 25 classes across the school. There are 230 Francophone and 330 Anglophone students taking part in the bilingual program. We’re truly pleased that the whole-school approach to French learning and the students' commitment to bilingualism continues year on year. The students benefit from a unique bilingual and multicultural education, and that’s exactly what drives the FANS team.

L’Étude - French Study

This year, we’ve further developed our after-school French support program with two sessions for Francophones students. The 2h-sessions offer a time for the homework with some assistance by our educators and a set of fun activities conducted in French  allowing for a full immersion experience.

DELF classes and History-Geography workshop

More than 40 high-school students are enrolled in our extracurricular classes. There are two options: DELF courses or a FANS tailor-made history-geography workshop. This year, we offer a total of 4 classes which cater for various levels and take place weekdays either at 4pm or 4.30pm at the Forestville Community Arts Centre. These classes  give a chance for our older students to further develop their French language skills as well as broaden their general knowledge.

What we have been up to in Term 1

Meet & Greet night (with some wine and cheese thrown in!)

On the 11th of February, a crowd of 70 parents and children came to our bilingual program info session, in its new format. What a great turn-out and fun-filled evening! Families were welcomed with FANS’ traditional wine & cheese, a great way to break the ice, meet fellow parents and learn about everything there is to know about the bilingual program. These events showcase the diverse, dynamic and engaged nature of our school community.

The popular Francophonie Week

What a week we had at KHPS with so many fun activities for the Francophonie Week. We were delighted to have 180 participants in the illustration competition, with Killarney Heights High School students joining in.
We shall do better and bigger next year!

Flag Hunt

Illustration Contest

Hockey Games

Echoes from the bilingual education conference in Canberra

Mrs Gillian Tegg and Anne Bentley attended this inspiring and insightful conference in Canberra in March. They shared experiences with multiple schools across Australia which offer a  French bilingual program.
A highlight of the trip was the renewal of our Label FrancEducation, the acknowledgment of the quality of our bilingual program.

French treats at KHPS

On Friday 8 April, mini 'pains au chocolat' are on offer for the little ones from the KHPS canteen.
Order with Flexischools before
Tuesday 5 April at 5pm.

What to look forward to in Term 2?

Back to school

School starts on Wednesday 27 April in Term 2.

The first lesson of Intensive French for Francophone will be on Thursday 28th, while Anglophone will start their Intensive French Before School class on Wednesday 4th May.

For our high-school students taking our FANS extracurricular classes at the Forestville Community Art Centre, the classes will start in Week 2 (from Monday 2nd May).

The French Study will be back on Tuesday and Wednesday from Week 2.

Recitation Competition

In Term 2, we have our traditional poem recitation competition for all KHPS students. The students will start practising their poems in week 5, and the competition winners will be announced in Week 10, with some amazing prizes up for grabs.

Early May - Kindy enrolments for 2023

The portal for enrolments in the bilingual program will open early May for the 2023 school year. Make sure you spread the word!

3 May – Info Night after year 6 options

FANS and Killarney Heights High School will present the local options to continue with the French learning after leaving KHPS.

Held at the KHPS Auditorium from 6.30pm to 8pm, a presentation will be followed by a Q&A with some drinks and nibbles on offer.

7 May – Raclette

Book the babysitter and join us at the school hall for FANS’ famous raclette event: a night filled with melted cheese, delicious cured meat and saucisson, Shiraz or Sauvignon, and a bit of dancing.

To host such a big party, we will need volunteers and lots of raclette machines from the community.
If you are happy to lend us a machine, please fill this short survey for us to start preparing.

9 May - The Canadian’s consulate special visit

At FANS, we feel it is important to engage with many French-speaking authorities. We have a great Canadian contingent represented throughout our school, from teachers to students as well as active committee and community members – so it is an honour to host a delegation from the Canadian Consulate.

After a comprehensive tour of the school, showcasing the bilingual program, Mr Andre Francois Giroux, the Canadian Consul and his team will meet members of the FANS team to speak about shared resources, promotion of the program and Sydney-based Canadian events and activities.

7 June – FANS AGM

We are looking forward to seeing you at the Annual General Meeting where you can find out more about our association and its projects, and where we present our annual report of finances and activities.

The committee is currently looking for a  Secretary.  The Secretary is an essential member of our executive committee team. If you are organised, methodical and impartial, and you are willing to assist us and coordinate meetings and projects, this role is for you! So why not get involved, join a dynamic team, and find out more about your association from the inside? Please contact Marianne Alla, if you’re interested.

18 June  - Sounds of Killarney

Based on the “Fete de la Musique” which originated in France in 1982, this event will see our KHPS band and local talents showcased in an afternoon of music, celebration and great community vibes.

Happy Easter, everyone. Stay safe and enjoy the much-deserved break!
